Big Big Bike Meet

headed for Calne in July?

John Newman

If you are riding from the north towards the town of Calne in Wiltshire along the A3102, your concentration will be diverted by a huge sculpture. It's a motorcycle made entirely of scaffolding poles.

Displayed in a field at the entrance to Beversbrook Farm, it was constructed in 2013 by Tony Welsby, and took two years to put together. Cutting who knows how many scaffolding pipes to the correct length is an amazing feat itself, but then having the ingenuity and imagination to shape this big beast is some achievement.

It was built in a barn and then craned to the farm field and entrance in time for the Calne Bike Meet. Intended to be in place for just a few months, it still stands proud and will be there in July when the next bike meet tales place on 24th and 25th.

Promoted as the largest free bike meet in Europe there are bands galore on the site and in the town, fireworks, veteran speedway, camping and the usual food and drink consumption. It's advertised as an event for the whole family.

Check out the website and go along if you are in the area - looks like a great event:
