Bonhams Autumn Stafford Sale on October the 15/16th, is offering a bike of one of the all time motorcycling greats - Barry Sheene. The beautiful Manx Norton was ridden to victory in Barry Sheene's last winning race and is offered for sale along with a collection of the World Champion's trophies.

The bike is a 2001 500cc Manx Norton, engineered by the celebrated Fred Walmsley and it carried Barry Sheene to first place in the Lennox Cup motorcycle event in the 2002 Goodwood Revival Meeting.

Barry Sheene had retired from Motorcycle Grand Prix racing in 1984, but clearly couldn't keep away and returned to historic racing in the 1990s.

Sheene scored two notable victories on a Walmsley motorcycle in 2002 but then tragically had a cancer diagnosis in July and put in a request for Fred Walmsley to provide a machine for him for the Goodwood Revival meeting. This meant that Fred had to make an overnight dash from the Czech Republic in order to prepare a motorcycle in time.

The bike which was used was a 2001 machine borrowed from Isle of Man TT rider John Cronshaw and fitted with a 90-bore engine, as the one already in the Norton wasn't seen as suitable for the Goodwood meeting. This bike and engine took Sheene to a win in the second Lennox Cup race, claiming overall victory for the trophy.

After Sheene's sad death at the age of 52, the Lennox Cup was renamed the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy in his honour. The bike was reunited with its original engine and then used by John Cronshaw in the 2002 InCA European Classic Series. Fred Walmsley sold it in 2003 and it ran at Le Mans the year after. Its last ride was the 2005 Sheene Run charity memorial motorcycling event in Rugby, and now refitted with its original number 7 race fairing, it is up for sale with an estimate of £55,000-75,000.
