East Sussex Wheels 2 Work Hits the Road…

Wheels 2 Work has arrived in Eastbourne

Following a successful bid to the Local Sustainable Transport Fund by East Sussex County Council, Devon Wheels 2 Work have been awarded the contract to bring a Wheels 2 Work scheme to East Sussex.

Wheels 2 Work is a scheme that provides affordable independent transport to individuals to allow them to access work, training or education opportunities. In East Sussex this will be through the provision of 50cc mopeds, 125cc scooters and motorcycles, and electric bicycles.

However, in East Sussex Wheels 2 Work is going a bit further... Building on twelve years of experience in Devon, East Sussex Wheels 2 Work has been created as a social enterprise. This means that it operates as a business but any profits are reinvested in Wheels 2 Work to keep the scooter and motorcycle rental costs affordable. The new premises in Eastbourne house a motorcycle workshop that is open to the general public and currently offers repairs and servicing for all makes and models of motorcycle. And a motorcycle MOT station is coming soon.

There is a showroom that stocks helmets, clothing and accessories. There is also a meeting room that can be booked by motorcycle or community groups for meetings. One of the biggest innovations is the provision of ‘bench time’ which can be arranged by appointment and allows people to work on their own bikes in the fully-equipped workshop with a qualified mechanic on hand to advise if required.

The staff team are keen bikers and are very involved in the Sussex motorcycle scene.

To give some background, Devon Wheels 2 Work has been operating since 2001 when it started with just ten mopeds, serving a very small area of rural Devon. It became a social enterprise in 2006 when they recognised that Local Authorities and other public funders were facing increasing pressures on the budgets, meaning that there was a strong possibility that grant funding would be increasingly difficult to obtain. Since then, the business has been developed and  significant progress has been made towards financial sustainability. There are up to one hundred and thirty motorcycles and scooters on the road in Devon.

Max Jowett, the Chief Executive, has been involved in Wheels 2 Work from the start and now provides advice, support and consultancy to existing and planned schemes across the UK.
