Italy puts its money where its mouth is regarding EVs
An Italian ministerial Decree offers incentives for citizens to buy electric and low emission vehicles
Italy is backing electric vehicles with actual subsidies, as a new ministerial decree in Italy will allocate £543 million (€650million) annually until 2024, to encourage people to buy electric and other low pollution vehicles. The new decree was signed by Mario Draghi, the Prime Minister of Italy and although it is aimed at cars mainly, it will also have some benefits for the electric motorcycle industry.
Reuters says that the Italian government will be subsidising the cost of new electric vehicles, including a possible 40% off the price of two wheeled machines when scrapping a Euro 0 to Euro 4 vehicle. Not bad, the Italian government is heading towards an electric future with more subsidies than the UK government.
Italy is already at the forefront of electric innovation and no stranger to electric machines, with Energica, its famous electric motorbike make, supplying the MotoE World Cup from the start. In fact Energica has been so successful that it has just been bought out by the US firm Ideanomics and looks to be going to get a lot of investment in its future.
