In an innovative move, Swedish electric bike manufacturer Cake (Nothing to do with Kladdkaka - Swedish sticky chocolate cake) have decided to get involved with the crisis which is facing the world's pollinators - namely the bees - and has brought out a new range of electric bikes in support of our buzzy little friends. The Kalk Flower Power Range from Cake is designed to raise awareness of the plight of bees and is supporting the World Bee Project with their efforts to save the bees. The World Bee project aims to get environmental concerns more into mainstream politics and under more scrutiny, so this project from Cake is very helpful for them.

Apparently since 1900 the UK alone has lost 13 species of bees and a further 35 species are currently at risk of extinction (figures from Friends of the Earth). Humans are thought to be responsible for an increase in extinction rates and all of this is jeopardising the food chain for everything living on the planet.

World Bee Project president Sabiha Rumani Malik said:
"We thank Cake for inspiring collective action with their flower inspired electric motorcycles that combine excitement with responsibility."

So what are Cake actually doing? Well they have designed and brought out a limited edition range of electric bike models called the Kalk Flower Power range. The bikes come in seven colours based on the colours of the flowers which bees love and which they need for their survival.

The Flower Power range is a limited edition series of only 20 machines of each of these bee-friendly flower colours: Sunflower, Rose, Marigold, Lavender, Cornflower, Hibiscus or Basil.
They are available for the Kalk&, Kalk Ink&, Kalk OR, Kalk Ink, Kalk OR Race and the Kalk Ink Race models. So basically you could choose a model and a colour and have a really unique bike knowing there couldn't be too many more out there and that you were helping the bees to boot as 5% of the profits from the sale of these bikes will go to the World Bee Project.

Cake also has an AP model in standard colours which is "engineered for wildlife conservation areas"

Stefan Ytterborn, the founder and CEO of Cake, said this about the project:
"The Flower Power initiative is a small contribution sharing the painful reality of our fragile ecosystem, where everyone is obligated to change and take action"

What do you think? Are you in favour of motorcycle manufacturers taking environmental action or do you think they should leave it to the politicians?
