41 years later – the cool little Dax is back!

Honda is catching a wave again as motorcycles are in the zeitgeist of the day, experiencing a huge wave of popularity due to the pandemic, the price of fuel and the sheer volume of traffic out there. Currently it would seem that smaller bikes and mopeds are especially popular for obvious reasons and people are finding them particularly helpful in towns and cities. Honda have an iconic mini bike line up of bikes like the Monkey Bike and the MSX125 Grom and now they are reviving another cult 1960s classic, the Honda Dax – here’s what we said about this midget gem when it was bike of the week back in the day.

The new reborn ST125 Dax is a clever mix of old and new with a T shaped pressed steel frame like the original, and a SOHC 124cc air-cooled single engine suspended from the frame. It sports a centrifugal clutch and a four speed manual gear box.

It is no weakling, despite its diminutive size, and offers 9.25bhp@7000rpm and 8lb.ft@5000rpm. This gives it a top speed of 55mph – not to be sneezed at! Plus its 3.8 litres of fuel can take you 149miles – excellent news in these days of high prices at the pumps.

Apart from its weenieness it is much like other modern bikes in tech and engineering, even with a mini LCD dash, LEDs and 31mm USD forks and twin rear shocks.

In shape, the modern Dax has retained its long body and short legs (reminiscent of a Dachshund which is where it got its name originally in 1969) and looks truly unique because of this, still keeping the fuel tank in the frame as per the original. To keep its classic feel it has blacked out 12in mini bike wheels with balloon tyres to help it nip around the block, oh and it’s even nippy two up.
