The Isle Of Wight Road Races Delayed

Unresolved Motor Race Order Issues Cause Hold Up

Image
The Isle of Wight Road Races which, it was hoped, were to go ahead in April of this year are now, perhaps unsurprisingly, going to be delayed. The permission to close public roads, or Motor Race Order (MRO), which is a pre requisite for the races to take place has hit problems which means that the races are going to have to be delayed.

James Kaye, the race promoter said:
“We have reluctantly accepted that the Isle of Wight Road Races now can’t go ahead on our planned dates this year. Our Motor Race Order application was submitted on time to the Isle of Wight Council on 19th October 2021, but has not yet been determined. We understand that there are some technical concerns, but this is out of our control and the clock has run down.”

The ACU have filled in all the relevant paperwork and permits as required for the Isle Of Wight's application but the Isle Of Wight Council Highways Authority is:
‘not yet satisfied that the application has been duly made in accordance with the relevant legislation’.
The IWRR team are going to be looking for ways to understand what the problems are and try to resolve them. Once this has happened new dates within the international road racing calendar will have to be negotiated and booked for the event.

The Isle of Wight Road Races have been predicted to bring an estimated £30m worth of direct investment to the island, likely to head straight into local Isle of Wight businesses, so it would be advantageous for the island economy.

The IWRR race promoters say:
“We would like to thank all the Isle of Wight Road Races fans and in particular the Island-based motorcycle clubs and the Facebook supporters group for their continued enthusiasm and encouragement. Especially those who had already looked to book travel and accommodation for April. We have received an enormous amount of positivity from across the whole Island, including many residents, land owners and businesses based in and around the circuit in Brighstone, Chale and Shorwell. We look forward to securing new dates for the Isle of Wight Road Races as soon as possible.”

It was always going to be difficult organising an event like this on public roads for the first time so I guess it's just a question of waiting to see if it can be done – watch this space.

Is this an event which whets your appetite? Would you go along? Or do you think it's a terrible idea?
